1st Season Re-watch

2020.10.28 17:11 LNLV 1st Season Re-watch

First of all (chronologically), I can't believe what terrible friends Katie and Kristen were! In the second episode, Stassi is telling them she broke up with Jax (which would have been warranted whether or not he got a stripper pregnant) and they immediately start talking about how good they LOOK together, their image as King/Queen of their little group, and referring to it as a break, rather than a breakup when Stassi is literally telling her "best friends" that her relationship is over. First of all, he was a terrible boyfriend even if he was never unfaithful! He lied, he was lazy, he lived off of her, he didn't come home after drinking... like there are tons of reasons to break up even if he never cheated. They were terrrrrible friends, I would never treat a friend like that during a break-up even if I thought her ex was innocent. They keep justifying it as "tough love" and saying everyone else is just telling her what she wants to hear, but it's not. It's garbage, they wanted her to stay in a toxic, unhappy relationship bc it made their lives easier and it makes me legitimately angry.
Secondly, I cannot handle how painfully cringy the Laura-Leigh/Jax scenes are. I feel so so bad for that girl, it's horrific. It's like everyone in the room is fully aware of what their "relationship" is except her. When she's talking about her feelings for Jax in that staff meeting and Stassi goes from angry/annoyed to trying not to laugh, Stassi wasn't being mean, that was the way everyone there (including Jax) was feeling. Laura-Leigh built this fairy-tale romance in her head and can't even see that even HE is surprised and weirded out by how much she worships him. Their sushi date when she says something along the lines of "it's like someone has been following me around for the last few years and wrote down everything I ever wanted in a man and made you" oh my god, I just want to hug her and remove her from that situation and deposit her directly into an intensive therapy program.
I'm only on episode 6 and I didn't pay close attention the first time I watched them (they were kind of on in the background) so I'm seeing a lot more this time.
TL;DR I'm rewatching VPR and I have a lot of feelings...

CD Projekt's ($OTGLY) biggest game to date is being released on Nov 19th. This is not just any release. This is the biggest RPG game of the decade. 8-10 years in making, it is not just slightly better than other games; it redefines the category. This thing is something everyone will be playing for years to come. Think of it as someone giving you a poke 3 weeks before the original Grand Theft Auto was released. This is the first in franchise.
Huge moat: Cost of production is in $120 Million to $200 million range which puts it in the same league as Grand theft auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2. GTA V has made 6 billion to date. Red Dead Redemption 2 made over $725 million in revenue in three days, and over 17 million copies shipped in total in two weeks. They have a staff of 500 working on this. It took 8-10 years to make this. No one else is gonna be able to compete for a long time.

The following is a u/MovieTrailerReply post about Cyberpunk 2077. Props to him:
Some facts about this game and why it is so exciting:
  • The Witcher 3 was CD Projekt Red's last title and it sold impressively enough to hit 25 in best selling games of all time. This was largely due to it being masterfully crafted as an RPG, with extensive and beautiful environments and a detailed, branching story. This is also a MASSIVE growth from their last two notable titles which you can see the comparison for here
  • CDProjektRed also has a fantastic track record for satisfying gamer customers. DLC/Expansion content has been devoid of crazy overionization and have strong content. The company is known for going that little extra mile, like putting out free updates that playfully make fun of the player for abusing a bug, or including extra items in the physical releases of their games (Witcher 2, for instance, had an art book and some merchandise included).
  • Cyberpunk2077 is a game that has been in development for more than 7 years -- The first teaser was shown in 2013. Usually this can be concerning (unless its a studio known for long development cycles like Square Enix or Hideo Kojima's projects), but combined with the high level of craftsmanship of the Witcher 3 and the VERY promising gameplay dives, people's hype and expectations have only grown spectacularly.
  • Gameplay shown off has been very positive - it's a great mix between a game series like Fallout (open world with quests to follow and an overarching story to complete) and GTA (freedom in your open world gameplay allows you to travel the entire map using a variety of vehicles and weapons).
  • One of the biggest draws to the game is as OP mentioned - the nerd fascination with Cyberpunk/dystopian futuristic settings. The game is based off of an established branded pen and paper game series Cyberpunk 2020. Not many people were really aware of it outside of pen-and-paper geeks, but the aesthetic and overall depiction of a futuristic sci-fi haven America is exciting the hell out of people.
  • The inclusion of Keanu Reeves was a huge surprise that hyped people up further due to the massive success of the John Wick movies.
Is it guaranteed to be a success? Well, the possibility is EXTREMELY strong. It will probably be a success off of sales alone - the newest consoles aren't going to be in stock enough to satisfy everyone, the game is one of the last huge titles for modern consoles (with a free upgrade to the next consoles), and it's been one of the most hotly anticipated games over the last decade. Gameplay shown so far has been promising and there isn't too much competition for the game in mid-november (the most notable of which is the new Call of Duty, which has had a SHITSHOW of a beta). That all being said, as titles like No Mans Sky or Mass Effect Andromeda have shown, nothing is guaranteed. I have no reason to suspect the game will suffer as badly as these, and there is not a single thing that indicates this could go that way, but you never know!
What does this mean for the Company? Well, as I said, CDProjektRed is one of the beloved companies out there. The only real blemish on their public image is an allegation that they engage in crunch culture, but by their own words it doesn't seem to be remotely the worst case and even serves as one of the better cases in an industry that just needs to overall improve. My personal gut feeling is that they're only improving as a company -- I played Witcher 2 and hated it despite it looking beautiful. Witcher 3 was a clear demonstration that they're very competent at making a satisfying, beautiful game that can hold its own with the biggest companies. There is very little doubt Cyberpunk 2077 will push their success further.

2020.10.27 00:45 PoetryDivided Which Zodiac Suspects Match The Physical Description ANSWERED

This post is in reply to u/TheAgentpp who posted a question about which Zodiac suspects matches most or all physical descriptions and also resembles the sketch.
Well, we could break down all of the suspects based on what (if any) measurements are known about them vs what's estimated to be the Zodiac. This and this website have been used as references for suspects. Some of these suspects may not be official suspects, might be speculation, and may seem insane, but as they are listed as suspects I will note their physical measurements and address how they match up to the sketch in my opinion. I will discuss how much each of these men look like the sketch at the end, as this is really a matter of opinion (to some degree). I will be rating how much I think they look like the sketches on a scale of 1-10; then I will put together looks and measurements. I do provide some sources for measurements, however, most of them were just found by doing a Google search. This is a Reddit post, not a court case; estimates are fine imo.
As we know, the descriptions of the Zodiac vary. This means it could be two people, or someone just isn't good at estimating height, weight, etc. Here is the link where I've gotten measurement ranges from this website. The shoe size can be found in multiple locations, although it is not listed on this website. I will not be getting into other specifics such as handwriting, etc. This is based on appearance/measurements alone. Any average shoe sizes will be taken from this website.

Zodiac measurements: 10.5 US Man's Shoe/Boot size. Height 5'8" - 6'0" (although most descriptions put the person below 5'10"). The weights reported vary, but range from 180 lbs to 220 lbs, according to my source listed above. It should be noted that according to that website, multiple witnesses reported that the Zodiac had reddish brown hair. However, hair color can be changed or a wig can be worn, therefore this is not something that I am taking into account.

SUSPECTS

Arthur Leigh Allen - Height is listed 6'0" on driver's license, which can be found here, weight is 250lbs, according to driver's license. His shoe size is 10.5, according to a quick google search. So, he's taller than most of the reports, he's also about 30 pounds heavier. Personally, in my group of friends, we have one who is 5'8" and one who is 6'0" and there is a clear difference. In my opinion it would be insanely hard to mistake as tall of a person for someone shorter. Therefore, even though he has the same shoe size, I believe based on this description, ALA can be ruled out.

Lawrence Kane - Height 5'9", weight is appx. 160 lbs. Source. His shoe size is not listed, nor can I find it in a google search. The average shoe size for someone of his height is 9 - 10.5. He matches the description pretty well, although he seems to be a bit light, however, if he's a very stocky looking man, this could make up for it. Based on physical description, if his shoe size matched, I would say he’s a pretty good physical description (based on measurements.)

Richard (Rick) Marshall – In my research I have found no height. I have also found no weight measurement, although from pictures he appears to be heavy-set. His shoe size is unknown, as his height is also unknown, I cannot estimate. Due to lack of data, there is no determination to be made here based strictly on measurement of the physical form.

Richard Gaikowski – Height 5’11”, weight appx. 200 lbs. Source. The average shoe size for someone of that height is between 11 – 12.5, however it is possible he could’ve worn smaller. According to a tapatalk forum, he “supposedly” wore 10.5 size shoes. No source for the information on this forum is given.

Theodore (Ted) Kaczynski – Height 5’9”, weight 153lbs (this was in 1997 upon his arrest as the Unabomber. It is possible he could’ve weighed more in the era of the Zodiac, as he was not living in the woods in a shack…) His shoe size is not listed, but the average shoe size for someone of his height is 9 - 10.5. If he happened to wear bigger shoes, he did pull a stunt as the Unabomber, where he used smaller soles on the bottom of his shoes. However, I imagine this would be hard to do with boots. Overall, he matches the requirements with one exception for weight. He is too thin.

Ross Sullivan – Height 6’2”, weight 260lbs. (However, this weight is disputed, multiple website entries say he was closer to 200lbs.) His shoe size is unknown. An average shoe size for someone of his height would be 11 to 12.5. A smaller shoe size is always possible, as some people do just have small feet. Overall, he matches a “stocky” build, but he seems to be too tall and too heavy to be the Zodiac. Also, if his feet were average size, they would be too big.

Donald Bujok – Height 5’9 1/2”, weight 200lbs. Source. Shoe size is unknown, but the average shoe size for a man of his height is 9.5-10.5. In general, if he has the right shoe size, he matches the description (at least measurement wise) fairly well.

Jack Tarrance – Height appx. 5’10”, weight 225 lbs. Weight is from a google search, this website only gives height and shoe size. Shoe size is 10.5. Overall, this description fits well.

Now, I will get into the discussion of if each of these men match the sketch or not.

Arthur Leigh Allen - I do not think that he matches the sketch. His face is far too round. He has the wrong eye shape, and his eyes are too close together. Based on the sketch and physical description, this is not the Zodiac Killer. 1/10, does not match.

Lawrence Kane - I do not think he matches the sketch. His face is a bit too wide and his head is too round. Even with glasses he does not match the sketch. 3/10, might be a match to some people, but isn’t in my eyes. Again, this is somewhat subjective.

Richard (Rick) Marshall - He doesn’t match the sketch at all. His face is too round, and his cheeks are too prominent. His nose is too bulbous as well. His jaw is too rounded. No, he doesn’t match the sketch, period. 1/10, he doesn’t match the sketch at all.

Richard Gaikowski - Based on this picture, and this picture, I do not think he matches the sketch well. He might be the best match so far, but he is not a good match. His nose is far too big, and his ears are very prominent. However, his general face and eye shape is an alright match. 4/10, I could see how some people say he matches the sketch, but his ears are very noticeable.

Theodore (Ted) Kaczynski - I generally do feel that photos of young Ted are an alright match to the Zodiac sketch. If he put some glasses on, I believe it would be about a 60% match. His nose is too big, and his chin protrudes a bit. However, his brow structure matches. His eyes appear to be the right shape, and they have the “baggy” structure underneath. However, I think they are a bit close. Overall, he matches the physical description fairly well, and he was in the San Francisco area (Berkeley, about 30 mins away) in 1967-1969. He isn’t in the area for long enough and imo it seems pretty ridiculous to suggest he is the Zodiac. Plenty of people match the physical description, it doesn’t mean they’re the Zodiac. 6/10 I know this is a controversial opinion, but other than his nose, I think he matches the sketch adequately. Remember, we are going off of appearance and measurements here, not solid evidence in the case against them.

Ross Sullivan - I do feel that Ross matches the sketch somewhat. He has a widow’s peak, the same size forehead, the right face shape, etc. The problem I have with him is again, his nose. It appears to be too large. Also, I don’t think the lip size is quite right. His chin is a bit rounded. In a quick glance, he matches the sketch, but as I said with Ted, many people match the sketch, it doesn’t mean they’re the Zodiac. Is there evidence? Can you place them at the crime? Those are the questions that need to be asked along with appearance, as eyewitness testimony can be unreliable and inconsistent as we’ve seen in the Zodiac case. 6/10 matches the sketch adequately, isn’t a perfect match.

Gareth Penn - Overall, I think at first glance or in a traumatic event, you could see/describe him as the sketch. He isn't an exact match. His nose appears to be the right size but I think his face is too long. His cheeks are too hollow, his ears are too prominent, and his chin/jawline is not wide enough. 4/10 I could see how he could be perceived as a match, especially with a brief glance. However, his face is very long compared to the sketch, which makes me believe that this is not a good match.

Donald Bujok - Again, this is a case where if you got a quick glance, he matches the sketch okay. His nose is about the right size, maybe slightly on the large side. His eyes are the right shape, and his jaw has the right shape. I think his eyes are not the right shape, as they are downturned instead of upturned, and also they are too far apart. However, glasses might minimize this and make it harder to notice. His ears do stick out quite far, which is something that none of the eyewitnesses noted, even though it is something very noticeable. His top lip is also very bowed, which doesn’t match the sketch at all. 5/10 He matches the sketch alright, aside from his ears and top lip. Especially with glasses to focus on, I could see him being an alright match for the sketch.

Jack Tarrance - I do not think that he is a match to the sketch. He is a man with glasses, that seems to be about it. I think that his ears stick out and are quite large, which again, was not mentioned by any of the witnesses. His nose is quite bulbous on the end and has a very noticeable “triangle” shape. His cheeks are too round and full. He also appears to have a cleft chin, which I can imagine would be of note as well. He also seems to have a hairline that is quite far back, even in younger photos 2/10 He has glasses, but that’s really about all he has going for him.

Now we must put all of the pieces together. I will also state birth years, to take that into account. According to Wikipedia the first confirmed Zodiac incident is the December 1968 murder of David Arthur Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen. The earliest suspected Zodiac incident is the June 1963 murder of Robert Domingos and Linda Edwards.

Arthur Leigh Allen (not a match): He was born in 1933, making him around 30 at the time of the earliest suspected Zodiac incident and 35 at the time of the first confirmed Zodiac incident. On the tall end of the 5’8”-6’0” height range for the Zodiac, 30 lbs overweight of the 180-220 lbs weight range for the Zodiac. Right shoe size. He has possibly 2/3 descriptive measurements on lock. He does not match the sketch. Overall, I don’t think based on this he matches what you are looking for.

Lawrence Kane (unlikely match): He was born in 1924, making him around 39 at the time of the earliest suspected Zodiac incident and around 44 at the time of the first confirmed Zodiac incident. About the right height, about 20lbs underweight of the 180-220 lbs weight range for the Zodiac. If his shoe size is average, he could fit into a 10.5. Assuming he can fit into the right shoe size, he also has 2 out of 3 descriptive measurements under his belt. He is a poor match for the sketch. He could be a match, but I would be shocked.

Richard (Rick) Marshall (not a match): He was born in 1926, making him around 37 at the time of the earliest suspected Zodiac incident and making him around 42 at the time of the first confirmed Zodiac incident. All of his measurements are unknown, although he looks like he is probably over the weight range. He matches 0 out of 3 measurement descriptors according to the limited data that we have. He does not match the sketch. This is not the Zodiac killer, if we are going based strictly on appearance.

Richard Gaikowski (potential match): He was born in 1936, making him around 27 at the time of the earliest suspected Zodiac incident and making him around 32 at the time of the first confirmed Zodiac incident. He is in the height range, in the weight range, and if we go with the tapatalk forum source, he is the right shoe size as well. This is 3 out of 3 measurement descriptors that he matches. He looks somewhat like the sketch. This could be the Zodiac killer, based on appearance and physical details alone (if the shoe size is correct).

Theodore (Ted) Kaczynski (potential match): He was born in 1942, making him around 21 at the time of the earliest suspected Zodiac incident and making him around 26 at the time of the first confirmed Zodiac incident. He is in the height range. He is about 30 pounds underweight of the weight range. If his shoe size is average with his weight, he could fit in a 10.5 shoe size. He matches 2 out of 3 of the measurement descriptors. He matches the sketch relatively well, meaning, based on physical looks and measurement descriptors, there is a possibility he could be the Zodiac killer.
Ross Sullivan (unlikely match): He was born in 1941, making him around 22 at the time of the earliest suspected Zodiac incident and making him around 27 at the time of the first confirmed Zodiac incident. He is too tall, slightly out of the height range. He is about 40 pounds overweight, but with his height, it could look like he was 220, instead of 260. If he had an average shoe size for his height, it would be too big. He has 0 out of 3 measurement descriptors, although he does match the “broad” or “stocky” description of the Zodiac. Overall, he matches the sketch pretty well. While it is possible he could have a size 10.5, and eyewitnesses could’ve misreported his height and weight, those are all theoretical and not known fact. Based on known fact, it is probably unlikely that he is the Zodiac killer because he does not match the assumed measurements for the Zodiac.
Gareth Penn (unlikely match): He was born in 1941, making him around 22 at the time of the earliest suspected Zodiac incident and making him around 27 at the time of the first confirmed Zodiac incident. He is in the height range, but on the high end. He is about 10 to 20 pounds underweight of the weight range. His shoe size is 12, his foot is far too big. He has 1 out of 3 measurement descriptors. He doesn’t match the sketch very well but could possibly be mistaken for the sketch at a glance. I do not think it is likely that he is the Zodiac based on these findings.
Donald Bujok (potential match): He was born in 1936, making him around 27 at the time of the earliest suspected Zodiac incident and making him around 32 at the time of the first confirmed Zodiac incident. He is in the height range. He is in the weight range. If his foot is average size for someone of his height, he could fit into a 10.5 size shoe. He has 3 out of 3 measurement descriptors. He does somewhat match the sketch, especially if he had glasses. However, his ears do stick out. I think based on measurements and appearance he is a potential, if not likely, match.
Jack Tarrance (unlikely match): He was born in 1928, making him around 35 at the time of the earliest suspected Zodiac incident and making him around 40 at the time of the first confirmed Zodiac incident. He is in the height range. He is 5 pounds over the weight range, but, I’m going to waive that as 5 pounds is not very much for someone that is 5’10”. He wears a size 10.5 shoe. In my eyes, he has 3 out of 3 measurement descriptors. However, if you really wanted to discount the weight measurement, he has 2 out of 3. I do not think he matches the sketch other than his glasses. If we assume the sketch is not accurate, then it is possible he could be the Zodiac. However, I am going off of the assumption that the sketch is accurate, therefore, based on my opinion (as look is subjective) I am saying that he is an unlikely match.

Bonus!!! If you think astrologically examining the suspects is stupid or worthless, move along.

On page 8 of Zodiac Unmasked by Robert Graysmith he mentions that crimes happen near water, and that the Zodiac cloaks himself in astrology; perhaps hinting that the Zodiac is a water sign. Later, on page 140, an astrologer thought that the Zodiac might be a Capricorn (which is an Earth sign). On page 130 of Zodiac by Robert Graysmith, the story about Joseph DeLouise (a Chicago psychic) begins. He mentioned that he kept getting the word “Berkeley” in connection with the Zodiac. (page 131) There’s more interesting details here that I feel could point to one suspect, but I won’t go into detail. I’m talking about astrology here. This psychic thought that the Zodiac was a Scorpio or an Aquarian because they kept seeing the numbers 11-2 or 2-11. (page 132) I’m going to look at the birth dates of all our suspects and their sun signs. Do with this what you will.
Arthur Leigh Allen – Sagittarius (December 18, 1933) Fire Sign
Lawrence Kane – Taurus (April 26, 1924) Earth Sign
Richard (Rick) Marshall – Pisces (March 13, 1926) Water Sign
Richard Gaikowski – Pisces (March 14, 1936) Water Sign
Theodore (Ted) Kaczynski – Gemini (May 22, 1942) Air Sign
Ross Sullivan – Leo (July 28, 1941) Fire Sign
Gareth Penn – Capricorn (January 1, 1941) Earth Sign
Donald Bujok – Cancer (July 6, 1936) Water Sign
Jack Tarrance – Aquarius (February 6, 1928) Air Sign

2020.10.24 10:44 chrisjhawk Need help finding an old movie with Lucifer, kidnappings, a cult, surgery, the apocalypse... good times

I need help finding a move I saw years ago (probably 90’s but possibly earlier).
The details of the plot are that a cult wants to give Lucifer a body who will return on some date (there’s also a giant apocalypse clock in the town square). The body in question has to be beautiful - I think one aspect of this is that they cut off their faces. I think they kidnap twelve or something like that, one of the targets ends up being the hero’s daughter. He rescues her at the end, but she’s been luciferized, and picks up a scalpel to stab him after they’ve been reunited, then puts it back down.
The scene that stands out in my mind is that one of the villains or cultists drives the daughter’s horses mad, and she ends up caught in the reigns around the neck between two horses running in parallel.
I vaguely recall it being interesting. Is this ringing any bells?
UPDATE - Googling plot details is shocking effective eventually -
THE EIGHTEENTH ANGEL
As a group of evil monks prepares to bring about the arrival of Satan on Earth, the family of the beautiful young Lucy Stanton (Rachael Leigh Cook) becomes involved in their scheme. The prophecy that the monks are trying to fulfill requires 18 perfect human specimens, and it appears that Lucy is one of them. As Lucy's father, Hugh (Christopher McDonald), attempts to protect her from harm, the devious Father Simeon (Maximilian Schell) paves the way for the imminent apocalypse.

2020.10.12 16:38 shadowkat79 Bingo #2! Mini-Reviews and Progress-to-Date

Bingo #2! Mini-Reviews and Progress-to-Date
Time for another bingo! You can find a link to my first (ever) bingo Mini-Reviews and Progress-to-Date thread here.
I’ve filled in some squares since my first row was completed, but since the top half of my card had been pretty empty, it actually took a few books before I achieved another bingo. One minor update on overall card choices since my last post: I had used A Magical Inheritance by my Book About Books square, but since then read Into the Labyrinth and decided to use that instead, using A Magical Inheritance for Novel Featuring a Ghost instead.
Anyway, excited to share my second bingo. I've attached a current snapshot of my visual card (thanks to u/shift_shaper for the Excel sheet I used to generate this image).
My second Bingo is Row 5 (beware - minor spoilers):
  • Novel with a Number in the Title: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo (4/5) - Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom are really just one long book; these books need to be read in their entirety in order to get a sense of “completion” both in terms of plot and character building. I’ve commented in several threads on these books before, and will summarize the gist here: solid writing with an enjoyable and well-constructed plot, but some definite problems with the character believability.
  • Romantic Fantasy / Paranormal Romance: Sacrificed to the Dragon by Jessie Donovan (1/5) - The premise of this book is absolutely ridiculous - women trade themselves to dragon clans to serve as breeding partners to half-man-half-dragon shifters in exchange for a vial of dragon blood that can be used to cure illness or sold for money. The ridiculousness of the plot was compounded by the mediocre writing (if I had a dollar for every time the author wrote “wanted, no needed…” I’d be rich…) Regardless, I was somewhat intrigued by a couple of the characters, and since the entire book took me about 4 hours total to read, I decided to keep reading the series. Hey - what can I say - we’re in a pandemic and I have a lot of time on my hands. I ended up reading the series until I reached a point where I was over it, the already thin plot became completely stagnant, and the books formulaic. These books do in fact get better, especially with the introduction of the Lochguard clan members, but I won't revisit this series again and would not really recommend it to anyone - there are far better romance books out there!
  • Novel with a Magical Pet: Arrows of the Queen by Mercedes Lackey (3.5/5) - I was surprised - I actually enjoyed this book more than I thought I would, especially after realizing it was a coming-of-age story with young characters and the 'attend-the-special-magic-school' trope. I tend to avoid these types of books as I prefer to read stories with adult characters and adult problems. But the book had several redeeming qualities that will likely lead me to finishing the trilogy. Lackey's prose was well-formed and pleasant to read; coincidentally, I read some of Carroll's work for this row as well, and the tone of Talia's inner monologue reminded me very much of Alice - full of wonder as she explores a new world. Talia's character development was well-paced against the plot, and I appreciated that she did not feel at home until she herself contributed to the Collegium. I liked that her Gift was empathy - unexpected in a magic system. And finally, the morality of the Heralds was refreshing and surprised me since this trilogy was written in the '80s.
  • Format: Graphic Novel (at least 1 vol.) OR Audiobook / Audio drama: Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll (3/5) - The second installment in Carroll’s world of Wonderland is definitely an enjoyable children's tale, but that is the limit of my appreciation for both of these books. Instead of dealing with the playing cards and dangerous croquet game of Alice in Wonderland, here Alice interacts with chess pieces on a very large board - the world she enters when she walks through the looking glass. And, just as words are inverted in a mirror, her expectations are turned upside-down across her experiences throughout the book. Those familiar with the Disney animated movie will find some of their favorite characters in this book - Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum, the 'Walrus and the Carpenter' with the oysters, and the talking flowers. Glad I read these two books and had the experience, but I will probably not read them again.
  • Novel Featuring Politics: The Last Argument of Kings by Joe Abercrombie (5/5) - The final novel of The First Law trilogy illustrates exactly why Joe Abercrombie deserves the Twitter handle LordGrimdark. The futility in this book is palpable. We find the "hero" of our story to be quite the opposite; instead of the virtuous savior, Bayaz is shown to be a power-hungry, cruel killer and manipulator, winning his way at any cost. Jezal is allowed zero character redemption - despite his best efforts; what he is able to achieve is ruthlessly taken away from him by Bayaz. The book ends with him helpless, scared, and rather pathetic, unable to wield any real power despite being king. Top that off with the brilliant irony of Logen ending the book in literally the exact same way as the first book started. Now THAT is textbook Grimdark at its finest. Highly recommend the entire series.

2020.10.12 15:39 pepperpavlov 1989 and 2019 compared

I know lots of us have the experience of a well-meaning older person suggesting names like "Heather" or "Erica" for our little ones, without understanding why those names might be unappealing to Millennials. So with that in mind, I put together some lists.
Here are the names that appear in 2019 top 100, but not at all on the 1989 top 1000 -- that is, the modern common names that might sound the most unusual to an older person who hasn't been exposed to contemporary name trends, and the most likely to be mistaken for "unique" by a non-name nerd.
Boys Girls
Aiden Aaliyah
Asher Addison
Declan Adeline
Easton Aria
Greyson Arya
Hudson Bella
Jaxon Brooklyn
Jaxson Camila
Jayden Delilah
Kayden Eliana

Paisley
Penelope
Peyton
Piper
Quinn
Riley
Rylee
Scarlett
Serenity
Skylar
Stella
Valentina
Violet
Willow
Zoey
The following names were in the top 100 in both years, that is, the names that both a modern name nerd/parent and an older non-name nerd might both agree are "classic."
Boys Girls
Aaron Abigail
Adam Allison
Adrian Anna
Alexander Elizabeth
Andrew Emily

Below are all the names that were on the top 1000 list in 1989, but not in 2019. It's crazy how names can change so much in one generation! Names in bold were in the top 100 in 1989, which are the names likely to sound common and normal to an older non-name nerd, but dated and unappealing to a young parent or name nerd.

2020.10.03 04:54 NeverendingBlueness Okay so anyway, I just watched ZODIAC

so my good comments are that it kept me intrigued and it was tense and scary at times and yes everyone’s acting was great i loved the thing ruffalo was doing w his voice i loved him and his buddy’s relationship jake its my first time watching him and he was just fine iron man first time seeing him as not a superhero and i did love his character and acting as well except im sad that he became an alcoholic but ig thats what happened irl so you cant do much about it. the thing tho for me is that i felt it was incredibly long or at least it made me feel like it was too long. i was 30 minutes in and i thought i was half way and i was exhausted but maybe thats bc it was late but really it was only 11pm. furthermore im not sure how i felt about the drastic contrasts in tone and mood (not even sure if this is the right term when talking about a movie) but by this i mean when they go from a really creepy zodiac killing scene to jake bringing his kid to school. on one hand i was grateful for it or else i would have been super scared the whole time but on the other i just not sure if i really liked that they did that. oh and again w the too long like why is the whole movie just dates after dates. like the whole thing is just 1 month later 7 years later etc i could barely keep up i think and it was pretty unnecessary unless it had been years. another thing why did he have 2 sons and we only saw 1 at first. also i wish we would have seen a little more of his and his wife’s relationship there was something abt the way they portrayed it that i didn’t really like idk. also why is it that towards the end off the movie he is constantly under rain. it was ridiculous he was always banging at someones door or some building with rain pouring on him like enough for me to notice hey this guy is just always soaking wet from rain not sure what they were trying to do w that. ok and last but not least RICK MARTINS OR WHATEVER IT WAS! WHY DID THEY ONLY INTRODUCE THSI LEAD NEAR THE END WHY DID VAUGHN SAY HE WROTE THE POSTERS AND IF HE ACTUALLY DID HELLO?? IS HE THE ZODIAC THEN BC THE GUY SAID THE POSTERS MATCHED THE LETTERS ALSO WHY WAS VAUGHN SO MENACING AND CREEPY TO HIM WHO WAS WALKING UPSTAIRS HOW COME HE NEVER ACTUALLY WENT TO RICKY INSTEAD OF ONLY GOING THRU VAUGHN WE NEVER EVEN SAW WHO THIS RICKY WAS WHY DIDNT HE DELVE DEEPER INTO THIS WHYYY DID VAUGHN CLAIM TO WRITE THE POSTERS AND THE NOT A LOT OF BASEMENTS IN CALI WHY DID HE JUST LET THAT GO OMG how did he go through that whole super duper sus experience w vaughn and then hop on back home to just find more evidence on leigh? im not saying i dont think its leigh bc i definitely do BUT VAUGHN WHAT WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?????
